DIY A Thank You Card

Nora just celebrated her first birthday party, which means I got to make some home made thank you cards!.. like I need a reason to craft.  I hope in the years to come Nora and I can make the cards together and have it be a little mommy and daughter tradition.   I can't believe Nora's first year of life just went by so fast and all of my mommy friends say that time only gets faster.  She had so many firsts this year and now there will be even more firsts to come and I know Nora is ready but sometimes I wonder if I am ready? Will I ever be ready? There has been lots of firsts for me too being a new mommy and learning what it's like to be a real grown up.

This card was extremely easy to make- all I did was stencil a triangle on a card stock and print out a black and white photo and cut out the image. Then I cut out a little thought bubble with the words thank you.  So simple and easy but really fun to make.

Happy Tuesday :)

Happy Friday! Nora has been teething this week and I have been getting a lot of this face.  :( I know mega frown face and this face is usually accompanied by her howl.  Being a first time parent- I didn't realize how painful teething was and all of the symptoms than go along with teething like fevers and rashes just to name a few. She has been requesting lots of cuddles and story time which she is already turning the pages of books and her hugs are so big.  She hugs with everything she is and I don't think I will ever get tired of them and hope she never grows out of hugging. She is getting her top 2 teeth and they are going to cut any day now but little baby is grouchy.  We have tried a variety of techniques to sooth her but her favorite thing is too chew on her tooth brush.  I think she likes the bristles of the brush up against her gums.  So hopefully those teeth will come out over the weekend.

This weekend is a busy one- with lots of catching up with old friends and baby birthday parties hopefully little baby's frown will turn upside down. lol  What are you up to this weekend?

Coconut & Berry Paleo Popsicles

It has been so incredibly hot here! like in 90s which is pretty hot for Portland. For being so hot it is the perfect weather for making popsicles.  Who doesn't love a cool refreshing treat on a hot day? I do I do! Since I had Nora, I have been on a get healthy kick which means I had to cut back on the refined sugar and I have a huge sweet tooth.  I decided to make a healthy popsicle and they turned out creamy and pretty delicious.

1 Cup BlueBerries
Handfull of Strawberries
1 can of coconut milk
1/4 cup of honey
1/4 cup of shredded coconut
1/4 teaspoon of salt
1/2 teaspoon of vanilla

Combine everything into a blender and pour into popsicle molds.  Put in your freezer and wait until the delicious treat hardens and viola! Perfect Summer Snack.

DIY Honey Comb Knobs

When I redid this toy chest- I needed to add knobs and I looked everywhere for some cute knobs but the ones that I liked that were baby friendly were all a little outside of my budget and I needed 8 knobs. So I decided to make some myself :)

Silicon Mold -  any silicon mold- I used a silicon ice cube tray which I bought this one.
Mold Release Spray - I used this brand.
Screws & Bolts
Skittles - Fun Size or King Size your preference :)

1.  Spray the Silion Mold Release Spray into mold- let it dry.  Mine took about an 30 minutes to dry.
2.  Mix your Resin
3.  Cut your Cardboard into small squares.  Poke a hole into the center of the small square.  Put the Screw into the hole and screw on the bolt- You want a little wiggle room because the head of the screw is going to be dipped into the reason and you want the bolt on the opposite side of the cardboard.
4.   Pour the resin into the mold. You want give yourself a some room on the top and careful not to over flow the mold.
5.  Put the heads of the screws into the mold.
6.  Wait 24 hours for the resin to dry.
7.  The Knobs should pop out easily because we used that mold release spray.
8.  Unscrew the knobs and remove the cardboard.
9.  Now enjoy that bag of skittles for a job well done.

Happy Weekend!  Can you tell that Nora's favorite food is spagetti? I'm not sure exactly how much makes it into her mouth but watching her slurp each noodle makes me just laugh.  She takes eating her spaghetti very seriously and keeps her busy which is a total bonus.  Lately when she's done eating she has figured out how to unbuckle herself and then stand up in her chair and start laughing.  I know exactly what she is thinking.. look at me! I just escaped :). It's completely dangerous but we don't leave her unattended but it still freaks me out.

This weekend is packed full of going to kids birthday parties and have yet to have been to a kids birthday party other than Nora's first birthday.  I am sure Nora will have a blast because she loves being around other kids.

What are you up to this weekend?

Nora's bib is c/o Oxo Tot. Oxo Tot is also doing a FB giveaway for all of their latest awesome products.

Toy chest Makeover

Nora has accumulated a ton of toys over the past year and they were starting to accumulate all over the house.  The pugs also love her toys and for some reason they think Nora's toys are their toys.  I'm sure it doesn't help that she throws a stuffed animal and they think it's a game of fetch and she claps when they bring the toy back to her.   So I went on a search for a toy chest.  I bought this one off Craig's List for 20 bucks and loved the scalloped details and a piano hinge. So just at looking at the bones of the chest I knew it just needed a little bit of paint and some new knobs.
I think it turned out perfect for a little girls room :) and think she will love it for years to come.

DIY: Make Your Own Postcard

This summer I wanted to start sending more mail or at least post cards.  I think what I love most about sending a postcard I can make art on the front and then right a nice little note on the other side and then it's off! I know everyone loves receiving a special something in the mail but especially in the summer time it's fun to share all of the adventures, road trips or just pop in to say hello to a friend.

There are 3 simple rules in sending a postcard.  I didn't make them up- the US Postal Service does have rules.

1.  The postcard must be rectangle.
2.  At least 3-1/2 inches high x 5 inches long x 0.007 inch thick
3.  No more than 4-1/4 inches high x 6 inches long x 0.016 inches thick

I prefer using a water color paper (140 lb Acid Free)  because it can handle whatever type of art supplies you want to put on the card.  If you do a drawing in pencil you can use a little hair spray to seal the drawing and then since it's going in the mail I put some clear packing tape to protect the drawing.

Happy Mailing!

Nora's Super Mario Party

All in all we had about 3 birthday parties for this little lady's first birthday.  Thinking about it now it seems like a teeny bit much but you only get one first birthday right? We had a birthday party at my parents and then the in-laws and then wanted to do a small one with just some close friends and then I could go a little over the top with theme and have fun hosting.  We ended up picking Super Mario theme which both of us played when we were kids and of course thought it was the perfect theme for a first birthday.
I wanted to DIY the party as much as possible like with the  home made cupcakes, mario style containers, a castle, signage, star cupcake toppers.  I ended up having a whole list of ideas  I am no party planner but I had a lot of fun making all of the party details and hoped my crafts didn't look like a 3 year old made them.
We had a mustachio station that the baby and kids went crazy over.  They used the mustaches for lots of mustaches and uni-brows.  Nora's mustache lasted all of 5 seconds.
Nora ate her cupcake and loved every bit of it.  It was her first time tasting chocolate and gobbled it up and then smeared it all over her dress. :)
By the end of the afternoon she had no dress and was scooting around as fast as she could with some balloons.  Yep it was that kind of awesome party.

Happy Birthday Nora

My baby turns 1 today. Nora is no longer a baby but now officially a toddler.  I can't believe that this time last year I was extremely pregnant and getting ready to have my baby.  My pregnancy was a tough one but it seems how easy it is to forget.

There has been so many milestones and beautiful memories that I will cherish for the rest of my life.. My favorite memory was when she first arrived and the doctor put her on my chest and the look in her eyes was - Hey I know you!. It was crazy and extremely emotional and think about how powerful that moment was when everything changes.  Everyday she makes me laugh and inspires me to be a not good but great mommy.

Weight: 24 lbs
Size: 12 months- she still fits into some of her 9 month onesies

Baby Milestones: She is about ready to walk! She can stand by herself and walks around furniture.  She has gone a few steps on her own but hasn't taken the plunge yet.  I think it's a confidence thing but she still crawls really fast and I know which she does walk.. she isn't going to walk she is going to run.  Her vocabulary has grown quite a bit and is a little chatter box and has imitated a lot of sounds like mama.. dada. row row row. doggy, choo choo etc.   A big milestone last night is that she grabbed a picture framed with her and Tim and pointed at Tim and said Daddy.  It was the first time I think she really got it versus imitating sounds or calling everyone Da Da.

Loves: Oranges, Strawberries and Hugs. All her favorite :)  I think Daddy is her favorite this month, when he comes home she starts squeal and bounce up and down with delight and then follows him around the house.

Hates: The dreaded Vacuum and sitting in shopping carts.  I started having to buckle her in and has already figured out how to escape from the buckle.

I can not believe she is one year old and this weekend having some of her baby friends come over for a pizza party.  Hope you are having a wonderful day!

Snail Mail

I love snail mail! I know it seems like now days it's so much easier to text or maybe shoot an email but there is something extra special about receiving surprises in the mail. I remember when I was a kid I would get so excited to go get the mail even if there wasn't anything for me and as I got a little older I would beg my mother for things to be sent in the mail.  I also love sending mail and care packages because it's amazing TLC through the mail. I'm participating in the Blogger Exchange where Bloggers from different states exchange care packages- this month theme was tell us where you come from.   Since being from Portland, Oregon- it is a pretty unusual place and different than most places. I've been to most states but it's going to be to see how a person tells me about where they come from.

I'm looking forward to making some new friends and sending out crafty things :)

In the woods.

Over the weekend we went out of town to go stay in my family's cabin out in the woods. It's a bit of a drive but it's the best coming out here in the summer time.  The weather was fantastic and perfect for the inflatable hippo pool.  The hippo pool sprayed water from the head which Nora was completely freaked out by it.  I turned on the hose to spray the water and she started crying and then clutched on to her guard pug Winston.  Winston then started barking at the hippo pool.  For a pug he is extremely protective and I think he is convinced that Nora is just like him. Nora wouldn't get in the pool but loved dipping her fingers and then splashing in the cold water.  Nora and the pugs just loved being outside and we just sat around in the hammok, bbqed and watched the river.

How was your weekend?

July Goals

1.  Complete the Summer of Love Workshop. Kara from I Just Might Explode's summer workshop for art journaling and photography. I have always kept an art journal but I am excited to have new creative prompts and a little direction.  When I art journaling I mainly keep one for thoughts, ideas, and drawing practice but I am excited for doing something a different and see art journaling and snapping photos in a new light.  I need to put this on my list so that I don't have an excuse to not finish it.  It seems like lately I have been looking for excuses not to finish projects especially creative projects.
2.   Have an amazing 4th of July and show Nora her first sparkler and fireworks.  This is Nora's very first fourth of July and we are getting so closed to her very first birthday.  It makes me wonder where has the time gone. Of course she wont hold the sparkler- she's too little but it's going to be fun to see her face light when she sees the fireworks twinkle and pop.  Tim is also very excited to get fireworks- typical boy he loves lighting things on fire and watching the fireworks explode.
3.  Plan Nora's first birthday party.  I don't have anything done for it and it's going to turn into this last minute thing and I don't want that for her birthday.  I have it all planned out in my mind lol but nothing is done and haven't sent out invites.   I love planning a party but somehow I some how feel overwhelmed because I want it to be great and memorable.  You only get a first birthday once. EEk- planning starts tonight.
4.  Do a Photo a Day Challenge.  I haven't done one of these in awhile and really want to do one again.  It's one of those goals that sounds great and then you forget about it and then you wished you would have done it.
5.  Finish 2 Books.  I love to read but being a mommy and making art it's hard to squeeze in time to read but I think I can do it.  I have 2 new books out and ready to read and hopefully they are good ones.

Road Trip to the Beach

Since it has been so incredibly hot we decided to get out of the house and do a road trip and went to the coast. Don't you just love road trips in the summer time?  The coast in the Pacific North West is generally cold, gray and rainy but so far this summer there has been some gorgeous weekends. One of best thing about driving on the coast is seeing all of the fun attractions.  You will see signs for World's Largest Clam or the Half Human Half Alligator (google it- his name is Jake) or there is also the Longest Garage Sale and now the Longest Beach!

Nora's new favorite game is going on Tim's shoulders and she thinks it's the funniest game ever.  She is getting so big and independent and the sweetest thing ever.  She grabs onto his hair and ears with all of her might and squeals with delight when she is on daddy's shoulders.  We walked the beach, ate chowder, and looked for shells with out much luck but such a fun day.
