DIY: Shoe Box Cardboard Notebook

Nora (Eleanor) is at that 18 month age that she just loves pens, pencils, markers, crayons, and chalk.. pretty much any type of drawing or writing utensils.  She has already starting drawing on the walls, fireplace, floors and even the pugs... Winston has a couple of big black Sharpie marks on him and she has been trying to feed him chalk.  I hope chalk isn't too dangerous.. it is Ikea chalk after all. :)

Shoe Box- I used a fancy Converse Shoe Box
Paper- I used graph paper
X-Acto Knife.
Needle with a big eye.
Bakers Twine or you can use Embroidery Thread
Hole Punch
Peanut Butter Cups

1.  Unfold your shoe box or make it flat. The Converse shoe box was easy to unfold and they detach on the inside to make flat.
2.  I used the very bottom of the shoe box with the shoe print.  The crease lines on the bottom of the box- I used as my guide to cut with my X-Acto knife.
3.  Once you have your bottom of your shoe box- it should be a rectangle.  Cut that in half with your X-Acto knife.
4.  Take your ruler and place it on the edge of the short side and poke a little hole at every half inch. like shown in image 3.  Do that to both cardboard pieces.
5.  Measure half inch dots on your paper but mark it with a pencil, then hole punch, like in image 4.
6.  Cut your paper to fit inside it's little notebook home.
7. Thread your needle and knot the end of the thread.  Line up the cardboard and paper to how you want it to look when your finished.  Start in the inside back cardboard and thread out and loop it around.  Then thread through all the holes in that line- so you will have two loops- when your need comes around for that second loop on the inside of the card board go to the next loop like in image 4.
8.  Once you have reached the other end knot it off.  Then draw a fancy letter or not so fancy letter on the front.
9.  Wrap the spine with the duct tape and that's it!
10.  Enjoy a hearty helping of peanut butter cups, which I indulged with Trader Joes Dark Chocolate ones and they were positively yummy.

The best thing about making a little notebook like this that it fits perfectly in a purse or diaper bag for Nora's art sessions in the stroller.  Nora is also loving anything that is non baby because she is a grand old age of 18 months- so this was the perfect little notebook for her.

Great idea! Also the one about having a notebook always ready for a toddler while not at home :) love that you used bakers twine for the spine.
