Making Art Everyday in 2015 // Day 150

Let's go Swimming.

What's interesting about this piece is that, I painted something similar to it several years ago. It's amazing how much my painting has changed and how much I have learned about composition.

Hope you are having a beautiful Saturday.

Making Art Everyday in 2015 // Day 149

This week has gone by so incredibly fast! The weather has been pretty incredible and only supposed to get better this weekend. I'm not sure what it is about the summer approaching, if it's the outside bbqs, the road trips to the salty coast or the berry picking. There are so many things to look forward to and I just can't wait.

I had my second baby in November of 2014 and I felt this over whelming need to make art.  I am painting art everyday in 2015! This is Day 145. If you want to read more about this project click here.

Facing Your Fears as an Artist

swim caps on and running for shore.

Being afraid and having fear is I think one of the worst possible things ever. Your art is something so extremely personal, that it scrapes the essence of your individuality. It is really the core of what makes you, you.

I have been showing and selling my work for nearly 7 years. I can't believe it has been 7 whole years! I am still deathly afraid, that my work is not good enough. I'm now at the point where I think maybe that fear will never go away or at least will it always be lingering around the corner. Can I dig deep enough and be brave enough to love what I make?

I have been on this amazing journey of making art and sharing it everyday. Since I had my 2nd baby back in November 2014, I wanted to have a small art challenge everyday because I felt this urge to hold on to my inner artist. I love being a wife and mother, it is one of the best experiences of my life, but I am an artist too. The inside of my heart is that I am a maker.

Realizing that I have to share my work everyday, made me realize that I have to face my fears in sharing work that wasn't perfect, isn't completed and not everyone was going to get. That it is ok to share my journey of discovery as an artist because it is always evolving. I'm proud to be an artist.

One of my biggest fears is sharing "not good enough" artwork especially on Facebook.  Why not? I love FB. I love snooping around and looking at everyone's photos and seeing what everybody is up to. What can I say? I just love being a snoop

I am completely terrified of sharing myself on FB. Terrified. I have all of my college, high school, grade school, new friends, old friends, my mother, my sisters, curators, art friends, blog friends on FB. Just thinking about updating my FB page worries me.

It's my 15 year self coming out and caring about what people think of me. I had a terrible time in high school and was not the cool kid. Now looking back I realized that I struggled with the fact that I am an artist and like to walk on a path less traveled. And that creative spirit doesn't necessarily fit into a box or have to.  I wasn't brave enough to think, learn and fall in love with art until after college.

Through my daily art challenge, it is slowly teaching me how to face my fears. My first fear was- Could I share my art everyday? Even the ugly art. Yes. Now I am choosing to face my fear and be brave enough to say I am an artist... even on Facebook.

Through my making art everyday challenge, I have realized that I am worth being creative every single day. You are worth every ounce of yourself to be a maker and creator. What ever your medium is. You are a being that is meant to create and be inspired everyday. You are worth it and you are brave and talented enough to be an artist. If you live your life for what other people think, then what kind of life is it? This is your life. This is your life. So go make something.

Follow along on Facebook.

Making Art Everyday in 2015 // Day 146

Vintage Imperial Lark Camera. Vintage cameras make me incredibly happy.

After having a few days away from my studio. It feels great to be back home and be working again.  June is just right around the corner.  This summer is going to be a busy one, especially having little kiddos. Everyday I struggle with never having enough time and managing. I can always do my best, but it seems like time just slips through my fingers everyday.

Making Art Everyday 2015 // Day 144

Working on more art mail today.

Polaroids.

Making art on the road is tough. Being outside of my studio to create is a hard. It's good exercise and mixes things up but I go back and forth of loving and hating my creativity. I would love to get better at feeling and being able to make things outside of my safe place.

Still no internet.. :(

Making Art Everyday in 2015 // Day 143

Paisley and trees.

We are spending the weekend out in Bend at an old cabin. I think my favorite part about being away from home is the quiet of your surroundings before the day really starts. I love hearing the quiet rustle of the trees or the occasional chirp of bird.

I have no internet, just my cell phone.. Eek.. Terrible but freeing.

Have a wonderful Saturday!

Making Art Everyday in 2015 // Day 142

Happy Friday! We are set to go out of town for the weekend and go camping. Well at least my version of camping, which involves a cabin in the woods. It will be great to get out of town and get a little inspiration from eastern Oregon, which is full of beautiful trees and high desert.

I still plan on waking up early before kiddos, to have some art time.  The best part about traveling out east is the early morning smell of dew and the long morning shadows. I will be armed with my water colors and sketchbook.

What are you up to this weekend?

Start Oil Painting- On the Cheap (Part 2)

In Part One, we talked about how and where to get oil painting supplies on the cheap. Now I want to to give you a really basic supply list. The fun thing about oil painting is that you can start out with a pretty basic supply list.  It can get expensive but the trick is to buy gradually and get a good core supply list.  Oil Paint can last a really long time especially if you put the cap on the tube. :)

Here goes, the basic supplies!

1. Paint Brushes. Buy a Synthetic Number 4 Round/Filbert/Flat. It can be cheap, just make sure the bristles don't fall out.  The great thing about about cheap brushes is that if you make a mistake and don't clean them properly, then you are only out a few bucks.  I previously wrote about brushes here. If you are just starting out, just get inexpensive ones and you can just be free to make awesome art. Usually art supply stores have a generic synthetic brush (not in a bag) and look at the bristles to make sure they are firmly in the ferrule. (the metal that holds the bristles).

2.  Paint.  You can buy a easy oil painting kit and it's the best bang for your buck. However some of those colors are a little strong and not the best to just start out with. Here is what I suggest to get started and they are more forgiving color. Yellow Ochre/Burnt Umber/Ultramarine Blue/ Cadmium Red/ Sap Green/ Burnt Sienna/Titanium White.  The expensive color is Cad Red but it's the best basic red to start with and it's a tube that will last you a long time. Optional colors that I love but can wait would be Pthalo Green/Cobalt Blue/Lemon Yellow.  Buy a professional grade, it doesn't have to be the highest end professional grade.

3.  Linseed Oil. The smallest and cheapest. a little goes along way and you can experiment with adding different sorts of oils later but linseed is a great basic that will give you base you need to feel the fluidity of your paint.

4.  Solvent. I use Turpenoid or Gamsol and you can buy a small container and get a bigger size later. It's important to clean your brushes and help the flow of your paint this is something will use.

5.  Canvas Boards or use the sketchbook Aquapaper by Bee Paper for initial painting surfaces. In the few art classes that I have taken, the instructors mostly use the boards. I use Aquapaper sketchbook because its a thick paper with little tooth and holds the paint really well.  I could never go back to any other sketchbook.

I also want to say I did not go to art school but I have been painting for a really long time.  You will develop your own palette, as you let your art grow and change.  This is just a basic list, that I think will give you the best results to learn and create the things you imagine.  Painting takes love mixed with practice but you can totally do this.

I had my second baby in November of 2014. I felt this over whelming feeling that I just needed to make art. I wanted to make more art then I ever did before I had kiddos. I am painting art everyday in 2015! This is Day 141.  If you want to read more about this project click here.

Making Art Everyday in 2015 // Day 136

Ice Cream face plant.

I have been starting this habit of waking up really early before my house gets up. It has been something that I have started looking forward to everyday. If I wake up a little late or skip my alarm, it feels like I am off all day long. It's been one of those days but it's nothing that ice cream can't fix.

Start Oil Painting- On the Cheap! Part 1

I love oil painting! I love it. The best thing about it is the versatility of the medium. There is something so beautiful about it and it's my absolute favorite thing to do.  It's magical and I can't quite describe if it's the rolling the paint brush in the paint or placing the brush on the surface and just creating.

Oil painting can be such a hard practice and extremely intimidating.  It has been around for over 500 years! which means there are a ton of choices and decisions, that have nothing to do with composition or even a small idea of a painting.

The first thing to figure out when starting to oil paint is how to shop and then the supply list.  Having good quality material enhances the quality of the work but I have discovered it can be a lot less expensive then acrylic painting with out sacrificing the quality of materials.

Oil painting can be and get really expensive.  Some tubes of paint can cost around $30 and that's just one tube! So before I go into a basic supply list (part 2). I don't want you to go down a rabbit hole with buying a bunch of unnecessary supplies. I want to give you a few tips on when, where and how to buy.

Here are some tips and tricks, to start your oil painting on the cheap.

1.  Shop at your local art supply store and ask if they have any sort of discount program. Most art supplies store offer a preferred customer program for free. Then you get an automatic discount every time you buy or get coupons.  Being on their mailing list, you will get notified when the big sales happen.

2.  Find out when your favorite oil painting brands have sales. Most companies have a big sale around August because it's back to school time. Gamblin Paint has two big sales a year, and its the best time to buy the really expensive tubes of paint. To find out about the sales, just ask specifically when a brand is having their semi annual sale.

3.  Buy paint at garage or estate sales. I love thrifting! If it's an estate sale, the person usually has some sort of hobby, if it's sewing, photography or painting. which means lots of art supplies. The biggest tip in buying second hand paint is squeezing the tube and making sure the paint is still good. It just takes a second but squeeze the end, make sure it's soft in the tube and not dried out. Since it's a garage sale- always negotiate for the best price. Always.

4.  Check to see if your town has a used art supply store. Used art supply? could it be true? In Portland, the used art supply store I've Been Framed.  They have new stuff too but they have a ton of stuff at reduced cost and not just oil paints but lots of other different types of media. It's worth checking out.  If you do buy used paint or thinners- check the liquidity of it to make sure it's still fresh.

5.  Discover if there are any local oil painting brands in your town.  I live in Portland and there are two that make paints here in town. Gamblin and Grumbacher They love connecting with local artists and usually have special sales for their small local art supply stores and also do tours! It's a great way to connect, support locally and learn how it's made.

Part 2 is having a basic oil painting supply list- so stay tuned.

Write On

A few weeks ago on instagram, I posted a note that I received my Write On starter kit and I wanted to send out some snail mail. Write on is a challenge of sending out 30 pieces of mail in 30 days. The starter kit that is free includes a pen and beautiful cards from Egg Press and Hello Lucky.

After saying I wanted to send out a few pieces of mail. I was a little overwhelmed by the response because I didn't think a bunch of people would actually want mail from me? I love receiving and sending mail. Who doesn't? but it's pretty awesome to think that people wanted a letter from me.

I have been thinking that I really want to include some art mail with in my write on letter. I am an artist after all, and why not include something extra special?   Art mail is exactly how it sounds, it's art that fits into an envelope.  I have sent and received art mail and still love the little treasures that have been sent to me.  So why not spread the love?

PS. Want to receive some mail? just shoot me an email at erikaleesears@gmail.com

88 Strong // 4/8

The Pie Spot!

This was a super fun painting to paint and I love putting little pieces of joy into my work.

Painting for shows is tough, like any project there is a looming dead line. Last year I wasn't able to finish all of the paintings for this show because I was very pregnant and miserable. This year it feels good knowing that I will be able to finish everything.

Making Art Everyday in 2015 // Day 131

It feels so good to be back in my studio after a few days off. It's amazing what a little break can do. It makes me miss my paint brushes and the distinct smell of oil paints. I can really dig in to what I am working on and even get a few new ideas. I love the days I can just lose myself in my work.

This piece is going to be apart of the 88 strong show.

Making Art Everyday in 2015 // Day 130

I love coming out and visiting my family at the coast, but no trip would be complete with out seeing some bears. The bears have a taken a liking to my mothers bird feeders.  The mama bear smacks down the feeders while the cubs eat the bird feed.  Bears are scary! but my mom smacks the window with a broom to scare them away and the mama bear looks at her with a little glint and eventually goes away.

Its our last day away and I have to say I miss my art studio but like all time away it's good to feel revitalized and ready to take on work head on. Since I have a pile of work waiting for me when I get home.

88 Strong // 3/8

PDX Cycle. I love painting a marquee it's my favorite part.

We are headed out of town for a few days to the coast. I plan on taking my sketchbook and watercolors. I love oil painting but it will be nice to take a break a miss my art studio.  The best thing is getting out of town and shaking up that creative energy. There is something about getting out of your dedicated work space and having to make it work and see what's happen.

We all still have colds but maybe the beach air will do us some good.  The poor kiddos coughing all night long and just wanting to cuddle.  I'm not sure if it's colds or allergies or maybe a combination but I do have a humidifier on blast and vick's on hand.

Making Art Everyday in 2015 // Day 123

Portland's Ace Hotel

Piece for upcoming art show, 88 strong at the Goodfoot. Oil painting on wood panel.

I love the Ace Hotel Portland! Before it was the Ace, it was a pretty run down and inexpensive hotel.    Kids would rent the top rooms and fill water balloons and throw them at the people walking below. If memory serves the balloons were not just filled with water. (horrible I know) I don't think you can open the windows anymore.  I'm sure for safety and prevent any shinnanegans. The Ace really restored the hotel to it's former glory and it's quite a site.

:) Happy Sunday.

88 Strong 1/8

This pink building makes me so incredibly happy.  I'm not sure if it's the polka dots or the pink.

This is my first piece for the upcoming annual art show 88 strong. It's 88 artists creating work around the curators chosen 88 themes. It's quite a remarkable show and has been going on for quite some time.  I'm painting a few of my favorite Portland places.
