Making Art Everyday in 2016

So today is the very last day of my project Making Art Everyday in 2016. I did it! It's crazy to think that I made art and was creative every single day for a whole year and it's my second year. This year wasn't short of it's challenges, but I knew what to expect. I knew that if myself or one my kids were sick, I would still need to show up for art. I knew that on the days that I didn't want to make art, I had to. I knew that on days when I was uninspired, and would rather be sleeping, rather be doing about anything else but be in the studio, I had to show up and make something.

At the start of this project two years ago, I did this project entirely for myself. I just had my son, Everett. and I was a working artist before I had my kids, but making art was turning less and less into a priority. I also want to be an awesome mom, and be hands on with their learning, laughter and life. I could feel art slipping away from me. When I had my son, I knew that I needed an art project that would force me to show up every day. I would have to share it online, to hold myself accountable, because if I didn't share it I wouldn't even get past the first week.

I am extremely grateful to choose art every single day even if it's just for ten minutes. Its my time, to just be me, and I try to be as authentic as possible. It's my time to shed away all of the layers of everything else going on in my life, and to just be myself. Granted, there are plenty of days in this art project that this is the last place I want to be, but overall I am very grateful. I am grateful for nourishing my spirit and soul. I am grateful for all of the emails, notes and messages that people send me about how much my little spot on the web means to them. I think what warms my heart the most is that I started this project because I wanted to save my creativity and my passion for making art, and it means even more that I have met and touched so many other people. I am truly grateful.

Originally, I wanted my year-end blog post to be about tips on completing and starting a year-long project. I think if I were to give you advice on starting a year-long project, I would first say that it's hard and there are going to be days that you won't want to show up and there are days that you will hate what you make. You will hate everything about the project and give yourself every excuse to just quit and might even trick yourself into thinking you can quit. I'm not going to embellish the part about it not being a difficult project, because it is hard. If you're ready to take on this sort of project, you need to do it for your authentic self. This is soul work. The best part is that you will feel yourself grow in ways that you can't possibly imagine. Every day is a new day, and you have the luxury of starting over.  Sometimes even the terrible days bring all sorts of surprises. I can't even tell you how fortunate and lucky I have been this year. I have sold more artwork this year than I ever did even before I had kids. It's been my best year to date. All I can say is that I promise myself that I will show up for art every day and try to make my best possible work. I am still growing and evolving as an artist, but this project makes me excited to go further than I ever thought I could.

So if you are thinking of starting any sort of project, I would love to hear about it.  If you are thinking about wanting to make art every day in 2017, Here are the rules that I followed the last 2 years. You can do it, and there is no giving up, and all you need to do is jump in.

Day 362 // Making Art Everyday in 2016

The best thing about a 10 minute sketch- is not being able to make a ton choices and just having to create as quickly as possible. The rain and wind shook the whole house last night and this morning.

Day 356 // Making Art Everyday in 2016

We went to one of Portland's oldest Christmas time traditions Peacock Lane! It's a street that has old historic homes and every single house is bursting with Christmas lights. I particularly like it for my little kiddos because it's a good short street but they have carolers and a necessary hot coco stand. It was also a place that I used to visit when I was a kid and it brings me a lot of joy knowing I can share a memory with my kiddos.

The Big 500!

The ninth Annual Big 500 opens tomorrow night at the Ford Gallery. There are over 500 artists that participate and all artwork is the same size on 8 inch by 8 inch wood panels. I have fifteen pieces in the show but there are over 4000 pieces total available for sale! The show is hung saloon style and it's a cash and carry show. What that means is that you can literally take the art off the wall and buy it. Every piece of art is the same price at only $40. The one tip I have for this show is to go early! The best thing about the show is seeing all of the beautiful work hung together and seeing all the different types of art. The line is very long to get in and a mad house, but it is oh so worth it.

This is the very last month of #12months of paint and the theme for December is Winter! I really can't believe this project has been happening for this whole year and this month is the last month to participate. There has been over 12000 uses of the hashtag #12monthsofpaint. That's pretty incredible and there has been some beautiful art.

Link below to learn more! Here are some of my favorites for November.

My talented cohosts for this project are : August WrenCourtney Cerruti and Meighan O'Toole

Bee Paper

I am quickly approaching the completion of my second full year of making art every single day. I can't really believe it! This year has gone by so much faster than the first year. The one question that I get asked the most is what type of sketchbook do you use? Well, turns out I use a Bee Paper Super Deluxe.

I am an oil painter through and through, but traditionally oil painters paint on wood panels or on canvas. I still paint on wood panels, but panels and canvas take up a lot of space, especially if you want to practice or just explore an idea. When I started my project, "Making Art Everyday," I needed something that wouldn't take up a ton of space and that could travel easily as well as be a place that I could paint whatever I wanted.

Before I started my project, I was going through large waves of avoiding the studio, avoiding art and just being terribly uninspired. It may have had something to do with becoming a mother, the hormones involved with that whole process, and transitioning to more of a role that took me away from art. So, why would I throw myself into a year long project with such a huge commitment to face my largest creative challenges head-on?

I discovered Bee Paper sketchbooks several years ago before the beginning of my project and before becoming a mother. Their great products were recommend by my local art supply store. They told me that this sketchbook was of the best quality and that they could handle any medium without the pages wrinkling. I inspected the sketchbook and the pages were thick, like a water paper but the tooth wasn't super grainy, which I liked. When a paper has too much tooth, then you can see the little ridges through the paint. I also liked the fact that the paper can really hold the paint. Oil painting is a painting in layers and this paper can really hold the paint without it wrinkling and all I have to do is leave the sketchbook open and it typically it dries overnight. If I am painting with thick layers it might take a little longer but in my experience it usually only takes a day or less.  It truly has the best paper.

I didn't really get into the sketchbook habit until I decided to embark on my project, "Making Art Every Day." A sketchbook gave me the flexibility to paint virtually anywhere and on the go. Since I have started this project, I have over a dozen sketchbooks filled with practice and all of my ideas. I love that, and I can see how far I have come and how much I have left to go.
