Making Art Every day in 2018

Are you thinking about doing a year-long project? Well, today, January first or any other day is the day! You just have to simply start and it's a big deal! I want to be completely honest with you about the journey. It's hard, it's not hard every day but there are periods of time that you will not want to make art or be creative at all. Like when you're sick or when your kid keeps you up all night and wants you to sleep in their teeny tiny toddler bed. (I am totally talking about Everett) What I have learned along the way is that in these moments I don't necessarily want make the best art, but I use that time to think about my process, what I want to be creating, practice some new skills or maybe try a new idea.

The best piece of advice when you are feeling uncreative or uninspired is to acknowledge it and realize there are other ways in finding your creativity. It doesn't have to be hard or perfect or ugly or beautiful. This year long journey is about showing up every day and seeing what happens, even if it's a stick person or a smiley face. Give yourself permission to create whatever you want and just show up.

January 1st is officially my fourth year at creating an original piece of art every day. What I plan on doing for the month of January is to give you a peek behind the curtain and share even more inspiration and exactly how I come up with and create something new right here on this blog. What I am going to show you is how I get unstuck and how the smallest crumb of an idea turns into something larger.

I have not planned this month ahead because I am making the actual art that day. Growing is important and sometimes I think in order to make the best work, you have to push and grow outside yourself.

Here are the original list of rules for this project.

1. Make art every day, no matter how big or small. Any medium counts. Even if I draw a stick person or just snap a blurry photo, the point is just to make art.
2.  I am not allowed to give up. This is very important.
3.  I am not allowed to throw away any artwork or rip out any pages in my sketch book. I am allowed to start over. I am not allowed to start painting over canvases or ripping out pages in my sketchbook.

Cheers to 2018! and good luck and good fortune for the year

2017! That's a wrap!

I did it! I created an original piece of art every single day in 2017! WAHOO! It's been three whole years of showing up every day and sharing it with you. It has been nothing short of a whirlwind and a very spiritual art making experience. It gives me an immense amount of gratitude for the creative journey because it's extraordinary what one person can do when they truly and deeply listen to their truth. The power of creating something is one of the most rewarding journeys one can do and has filled my soul in more ways then I could have imagined.

I have a tendency to get overwhelmed with appreciation and even more gratitude because I have read every single note, message, email and comment. I started this project purely for selfish reasons because I wanted to keep being creative after the birth of my second child. It sounds like such a small request and gift for myself. Thank you! I plan on continuing into 2018 and I am even more excited to keep creating. I know I have a ton more growing to do and can't wait to see what the year brings.

Smells like Christmas

Who else is recovering from the weekend? Well other then the house being a tornado. I can put orange slices, cranberries, rosemary, and cinnamon sticks into a pot and then the whole house smells like Christmas.

Crafty Wonderland

Crafty Wonderland is this weekend! This year I am participating in Crafty Wonderland. There are over 250 vendors and the first 150 shoppers each day get the infamous Crafty Wonderland goodie bag! Wahooo! I will be at booth 201, so when you get your map at the front door, come by and say hi. This is a big leap for me because I am generally pretty introverted, so doing a big event like this is good for me to get out of my comfort zone and out of my studio. I will be there will original paintings, prints, and several of my sketchbooks that you can flip through from my Making Art Every Day Project.

See you there!!

Details!
December 9th and 10th.

The 10th Annual Big 500.

Wow! The 10th annual Big 500 opens this weekend! This is my all time favorite Portland art show. I have participated in this magical event every single year. The show has over 500 artists that are part of the show, which means there are lots of different types of artistic disciplines. Each artist is given 8 inch by 8 inch wood panels and they can choose whatever they wish to create. Every piece of art is the exact same price ($40!) and the show is hung saloon style. The show is also cash and carry, which means that it is first come first serve. You take the art you want off the wall and you can bring it home that night.

The biggest tip for attending this show is to get there early because there will be a lot of people.  There are people that wait in line for several hours before the show opens. There are a lot of collectors and artists that look forward to this show every year, and I am one of them! This is just one of those special events where its so beautiful seeing all the different types of work together.

Everett turns 3

It happened ! Everett turned 3! and he has so much energy and is constantly keeping me on my toes. He is my darter and my shy guy. My favorite is when he still gives me the full body hugs and pulls me in close when its bed time. He always asks for big hugs and makes sure that I am ok. He loves chocolate chip cookies and has a pretty big sweet tooth. Loves racing and launching his whole body while he runs. He is very ticklish and laughs at all of my jokes. Now I just have to get him to potty train.

2017 Pumpkin Patch

I can't get over how big my family is getting. It doesn't feel that long ago they were little tiny babies. We have been going to the exact same Pumpkin Patch in Sauvie's Island, since Tim and I first moved in together. When I found out I was pregnant with Nora, we came to the Pumpkin Patch. It's a special place with beautiful views, crunchy elephant ears, buttery corn on the cob and a nice long hay ride. It's my favorite.

Oh and yes that is Tim wearing plaid on plaid. Hehe.
