Day 87 // Making Art Everyday in 2017

the sun came out for a few minutes this morning before the big curly clouds decided to roll in. Everett and Nora were both up last night, being scared of the dark.

Portland Pizza Crawl // Part 1

I was recently hanging out with a few of my friends and we had the greatest idea ever and that was to get together and do a Portland Pizza Crawl. Now, don't be jealous, because it's a pretty fantastic idea. The objective is to obviously eat amazing pizza, but to also be on the quest to find the very best pizza in all of Portland or at least try as much pizza as possible. You could say, I am a bit of a pizza connoisseur, and I think if I could eat one food for the rest of my life, it would for sure be pizza. So this won't be the first installment in this series.

First Stop was Pizza Jerk, and I have heard a few good things about it, but I am skeptical because you won't know until you actually taste it. We walked in and it has a neighborhood classic pizza atmosphere with checkered table cloths and the bearded owner greeting us. We ordered the half Cully which is pepperoni, pineapple, bunk hot peppers, basil, and bee local honey. On the other half was Jimmy Pesto Jr with pesto potato, green beans and truffle ricotta. Pizza Jerk definitely won the best crust of the day. It was a thin crust, but it was thin all through even to the rounded edges and it wasn't doughy. They used fresh local ingredients and it was freaking delicious. The Cully was spicy and sweet and I am still thinking about it. It's a neighborhood pizza joint, but my only complaint is that it needs to move closer to my house.

Second stop was the delicious Red Sauce. It is literally right across the street from Pizza Jerk. We initially planned our crawl based on location, so that we could optimize the most pizza eating. The layout is a little funky because they have two entrances; a take out counter and a restaurant entrance.  Aesthetics aside, let's get to the pizza. We ordered a half Porklandia kale, red onion, goat cheese, house pepper bacon, chili flake and half of the Ruthless - ricotta, mushroom, truffle oil, sea salt. We also ordered the home made ding dong- and it was the perfect sweet treat to go along side a big juicy pie.

The third and final stop was Lovely's Fifty Fifty. We ordered the black trumpet with spigarello, fiore sardo and gremolata. The pizza place puts in a lot of thought and care into making delicious pizza. The crust is thin, but at the ends of the crust it is doughy. They sprinkle a dusting of cheese which makes it a delicious, cheesy bread stick. The pizza, despite having ingredients I had to look up on Google, was complex and had a delicious depth. It's in the heart of the Mississippi district and also has fresh ice cream.

It was pretty much the most fun evening ever and we are already planning the next one.

YouTube

I started a YouTube channel. I started with uploading every single one of my sketchbooks. Yay! It felt pretty great, sort of like cataloging and looking back on my art making journey. It's crazy looking back and seeing how far I have come with daily practice. I started out my journey working out of just one sketchbook. It slowly grew because I wanted to work in different sizes, and I now work out of 4 different sketchbooks, so it takes much longer to fill one up. I also love the idea that I can have a quick look through of my daily inspiration. I can see how far I've grown and were I want to grow as an artist.

I plan on updating the space a whole lot more with some how to videos and painting videos, but if there is anything that you want to see, let me know!.

Day 72 // Making Art Everyday in 2017

“When one tugs at a single thing in nature, he finds it attached to the rest of the world.”
― John Muir

Thank you for everything and it means a lot to me to know that people care. I haven't been able to respond to all the texts, notes, and emails because I'm still a big ol' cry baby about it and it hurts.  Painting helps but art always does.

Day 71 // Making Art Everyday in 2017

Today is a sad day in the Sears Family. Winston collapsed this morning and was rushed to the emergency room. He passed away in my arms on the way to the hospital. At the hospital, they did CPR and an ultrasound. The vet found a large mass in his liver, indicated the cause was more than likely to have been liver cancer.  Winston was my first baby and the most loyal dog a person could ask for. He was always on guard, the softest pug around and the loudest snorer.  We bought him the first year of our marriage. He came with us when we moved into our first home.  He was there waiting for us after both of our children were born and greeted them with big huffs and sniffs.  He always smelled faintly like corn flakes and purple soda. He was my dog and he was loved. So loved and I miss him.

Day 68 // Making Art Everyday in 2017

So I suffer from bouts of not wanting to be creative and make art. It's sort of a double edged sword, I miss art and miss being inspired, but I don't want to make it. I know that it will come around but I'm back to painting at my kitchen table, which my husband hates. It was relieving to just make something in a different light.

Day 65 // Making Art Everyday in 2017

I'm not usually away from my children for more than a few hours, and going away for a few days is a huge deal. Everett took it pretty tough this year and woke up at 4 am and wanted to talk about it. Poor guy, eventually I convinced him everything is ok and 4 am is time for sleep. Waking up at 4 am does have it plus sides, I did find my Valentine's day candy stash.
