Monarch.

2 minute sketch. a monarch, still thinking about them from our camping trip this summer. We went to east lake and there were so many of them, almost as if they were out of a dream.

Nora's First and Last Day of Preschool

These were taken from Nora's first and last day of preschool. The school year went by so quickly and she officially looks like a kid. It's amazing how many leaps and bounds she has grown over the year. She wanted to wear her Christmas dress which is obviously too short for her already, but we did put shorts on underneath. Why deprive a kid of wearing what she wants?

Nora is strong-minded, has laser focus, loves creativity and to build things. She is pretty sensitive and loves to laugh. She is going to be in Kindergarten this next year and her school has already organized playdates for her to get used to the school. She is going to be taking the bus, but there are a couple of girls down the street that will be in Kindergarten and in first grade.

I'm looking forward to meeting a whole new circle of families that live in our neighborhood and that Nora will have the chance to go through school with. I know school is difficult and challenging for so many non-educational reasons, but I hope she loves it and cherishes how special this time truly is. I started looking at the volunteer opportunities and I hope I can contribute to her classroom because I want to be involved in the process.

You guys! I have a kindergartener!

Let's just run away.

Life has been so busy, in all the best ways. But even on the busiest days, I always look at my husband and ask if he would just like to drop everything and runaway together.

Gone Fishing.

Went fishing. I wish this was the case of going fish and dipping my feet into a lake. This week is getting Nora ready or actually myself ready for her first day of Kindergarten.

Recap from the Portland Art Museum's Monster Drawing Rally

Recently I participated in the Portland Art Museum's Monster Drawing Rally. It's an event that over 75 artists are invited to in order to  participate to make drawings for charity. There are three rounds and each round is an hour each. Each artist has one hour to make as much artwork as possible. The best part about the event is that the artists selected to participate come from all different disciplines and the event is open to the public.

I was extremely nervous about participating because, as you can see from the picture, you are surrounded by people watching you work. So, basically, no pressure! ha! I am so glad that I did it. I felt like I broke through and really was able to focus on the art despite my nerves. It felt good to step out of my comfort zone and just be me.

Summer Mountains

The rock formations from central Oregon at dawn, were pretty incredible. Just when the sun peaks over the horizon and the light touches the rocks. Summer is almost over and slowly reflecting on all of the miles that summer brought.  An exploration of color.

Yellow Bird.

They say that when an eclipse happens that it is a sign of a new beginning and new energy. I still am thinking about the goosebumps from the cold of the moon covering the sun. The  way the light felt different almost as if I was walking through a movie.  This morning, and I am not sure if I was dreaming. A yellow bird outside my window, but after I blinked a few times it was gone. 10 minute sketch.

DIY: How to Make your Own Eclipse Viewer

Have you gotten your eclipse sunglasses yet? Is every where sold out? Here is a quick and easy way to make your own eclipse viewer with items you probably have around the house.

Supplies
Cereal Box
Paper
Scissors
Tape
Aluminum Foil

1.  Open your cereal box and remove everything from inside.
2.  Trace the bottom rectangle of the cereal box on a piece of paper and cut it out. Glue the piece of paper to the inside bottom of the box.
3.  Close the tope of the box and cute two holes on either side of the top of the box, like the picture above.
4.  Tape aluminum foil on one of the holes and prick a pin hole in the center.
5. The day of the eclipse.  You look through the open side of the viewer. The eclipse goes through hole and you will see the reflection inside the box.

That's it!

Yayoi Kusama's Infinity Mirrors at the Seattle Art Museum

I have been such a huge fan of Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama. Yayoi creates her artwork inspired by her state of mental health.  She committed herself  to a psychiatric hospital in Japan since 1977. Her art is her release and treatment for her psychological hallucinations. Over the winter it was announced that she would have be having a show at the Seattle Art Museum.

I knew immediately that I needed to get tickets for the whole family! I know what you're thinking. How are a 5 year old and a 2 year old going to handle a art museum? Since my kids are pretty active, I knew that they would be engaged because of the level of intensity of the work. With Yayoi's use of bright colors and strong images, I knew my kids and even Tim would be captivated.

I got tickets right when they went on sale, but it took a good 2 hours. SAM's web servers kept crashing and I don't think they anticipated the popularity of the event. Later I found out the show sold out in a week. SAM does have a certain amount of tickets for people to go the day of but the line is a several hour wait. They also announced that they extended the museum's hours to allow more people to see the show.

Go see this show. It is worth the wait! My kids loved the show and they did amazing. Nora is 5 and this was the first time she really enjoyed the museum. She talked about the paintings and the art. She told me what she saw and she saw lots of treasure maps and animals.  She held my hand and I could see her absorbing every moment. It was special.

The show is set up to highlight her different rooms. Only 2 - 4 people for 30 seconds are allowed in a room at a time, and the energy of the rooms sucks you in immediately. You can go into a room as many times as you want, but you have to wait in line, which the wait is generally around 5-10 minutes. Not terrible.

The best part about the show is the feeling the different levels of energy that flow from room to room. They all make sense together but each room has a different vibe. As you walk into the show, there are a collection of her paintings and that are just beautiful. I think what I love most about her work are the joyful colors with the juxtaposition of the dark when you step in and take a closer look.

Tickets are available until September 10! I needed to record this memory.

Over the last few years especially being a mother and artist. I have learned to listen and follow my inner compass. It's not always the easiest, but I think of it often and today I just need that reminder.
