Why Art is Important.

Happy Monday! Did you have a nice weekend? The hubs and I had such a nice weekend of just running errands and getting ready for the busy week ahead.  I promised the hubs that I would start working on reorganizing a few of our home and work spaces and you know what that means.. redecorating! I am going to be repainting spaces and wanted to create more space dedicated to art..  Art is so important and I started thinking about why art is important.
1.  Art is important in documenting and capturing a little slice life.  I am a realism painter because I really feel strongly about capturing life now and I am in love with the idea of capturing something in that moment. I think some of the most interesting art pieces through out history are the ones documenting the world.  A little glimpse into the past through the eyes of an artist.  If you look at some of Picasso paintings- he loved the ladies and he loved his dachshunds and you could really see yourself in that world.  I always imagined his life of a messy decadence.
2.  Art is important because captures magic, imagination, and wonder.  As I have gotten older- I have realized how important those qualities are and as you get older how much harder it is to hold onto those qualities.  I recently found some of my old drawings when I was a kid and they were full of rainbows and pirates.  I was always told there was a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow but I remember thinking that if I could never find that pot of gold at the end of the rainbow- I am sure a pirate could find that pot of gold. :) I just love remembering that pure magic.  I try to squeeze little bits of that dust into my paintings now but it's something I chase after.
3.  Art is important because it can be a true expression. There are so many different types of art.. fine art. designed art.. performance art.. commercial art.. and many many more.. Art is a great way of communication and I know sometimes it can be difficult to express oneself but sometimes you can just clear everything out of ones mind and just make.  The art of making things- is such an amazing thing!  I know growing up and pretty much my whole life- I always have a safe place with my artwork.  It's a place that I can go and just be me and say whatever I want to say.. yell as loud as I want to yell.. make whatever I want to make... just being free...

What do you think? Why do you think art is important?

Nice summary on the importance of Art. You're certainly right on art being true expression.

I love this! I agree that art is so important. I think you are amazing for following your dreams...not everyone has the guts to become an artist.

This is a really great topic. Very thought-provoking. Truthfully, I don't like art. I can't stand going to art museums. Isn't that weird?

I think the thing I love most about art is its ability to communicate the things we can't put into words. Art can be a cry, a groan, a laugh, a scream, a prayer.

It touches that intangibly human thing in us and doesn't let go.

Love your post here, because, as a fellow painter, art is sooooo important to me. It shows the inner world of the artist, as much as the outer. Colors are a true life-force to me, like music and smell. If i don't have time to pkay on my palette, i start feeling sick! Agree with all your points here also. Have a happy week!

This was such a great post! Art is so important, and all the different types of art out there. It's awesome cause I love music as much as you love painting, and both art forms speak so loudly!

sometimes looking at a piece of art is like looking at one of your dreams...made on canvas . I can stare at certain picture for hours at the time, just imagining what happened to the artist while he was painting, or what's going on in the painting itself. You let your mind go in front of a good piece of art, it stimulating.

to me, art is important because it is one of the only outlets where you are absolutely free to do and express yourself however you please.

I love this. I think art and communication is one of the more important aspects for me because I am a strong believer that we as a people need more than words to share with one another. We need things to be shared with all the senses, and art does this.

I agree. I'm not a good or a trained painter, but I feel satisfied after producing something pretty or thoughtful with my own hands. It's therapeutic, too--something to get lost in and feel satisfied with when perhaps other things are not.

i love how reorganizing and redecorating always seem to go hand in hand. :) i loved this post. and i agree with the importance of art and how it really does freeze moments of life that we can keep forever.

Very well said!! I looked through some of my earlier stuff when I was a child. I miss the freedom, the confidence and the imagination I expressed through my art back in the days. Sadly, my perfectionist side destroys a lot of the stuff I create in both music and art.

the art that resonates most with me these days relates to your no. 1 - that of daily life. it's so easy to gloss over it for something bigger, but those tender vignettes of life are what make the bigger things possible. love this post as it go me to think about the question.

Wow, great post. I have so many thoughts on this too.

One is that art is important because it provokes emotion in the viewer as well as the artist.

I love this post and definitely agree with your comment that as you get older, it's even more important to capture wonder. Art is also a great social commentary. I could not live without art :)

Love this post! I have kept my apartment walls white for all these years because they easily allow me to display my ever-growing collection of art!! I love the color it brings into a space and the memories and feelings it gives me every time I look at them.

Love your blog, and I wish I was better at making art. Good thing there are people like you who are super talented to make up for my lack thereof! <3

One reason I think it is important is because it is a gift that can be shared and can transcend time.

Thank you so much for visiting us, we took our Dougal to see a behaviourist at ARC animal rescue centre, she gave us lots of tips. Whilst there I browsed the gift section and saw a cute Christmas card of two corgi dogs aside two old lady shoes under a table. The caption from the dogs read "I wonder if we'll get a mention this year". Yes you are right Art does document life! (Queens Christmas Speech)
