Old Motel Making art is my joy. My pure joy. Being a mommy, I have to be so extremely selfless to my children. I love being a mother. I can not tell you how much happiness has come into my life being a mommy. (way more than I ever expected or hoped for). Being a mommy is one of my greatest adventures! I am not just a mother, but I am also an artist and I'm just Erika. I think sometimes living day to day, we forget how important it is for us to be individuals and listening to our inner self. Being a mother is one of my greatest accomplishments but it's not all that I am. The art (the best part) is part of my making art everyday project and this is day 197. "All happiness begins with a leisurely breakfast." John Gunther. I used to hate breakfast when I was a kid and now it's my favorite meal of the day. It's the best to enjoy something scrumptious, before the day really starts. ... especially if there is a little piece of cake involved. The art (the best part) is part of my making art everyday project and this is day 157. To read more about this awesome project click here ....

Last day of august? Can you believe it? This summer seemed to have passed by in a blink. I can already tell that fall is approaching because there is a crisp cool breeze already in the air. My favorite time to make art is in the fall because in my town you can really see the seasons change- and during the fall the leaves change from green to red/orange/yellow and you can really smell the trees in the air. I know it's a little odd but you can smell Christmas approaching. :) Here is the latest for a painting a day- I wanted to do an impressionistic... blurry.. scratchy.. night scene. Painting dark on dark is pretty tough because the layering of the different depths of dark. I had the most fun painting the lights. Oil painting on board- 8 inch by 8 inch. :)...
I really wanted to paint a fun old yellow couch for a painting a day chellenge. This is an oil painting that is painted on wood panel. I started out with a pencil sketch directly on the panel. How I came up with the image- is that I use a series of images and piece them all together to create one image! This way I can get exactly everything that I want in the picture. :) I wanted to have the light streaming through the windows and do an outside in kind of effect. What are you making today? ...
Well my painting a day is ode to Mad Men. First of all I can not get enough of the show- I just love the style and the drama. I also love their creative department and how they look like they have hand drawn story boards and I simple just die over all the outfits.. It's so funny watching the pregnant ladies drink and smoke- I am guessing they didn't know better back then? I am only in season 3- so don't spoil it for me! I didn't think my painting a day yesterday was finished so I repainted it with a mad men theme :) I repainted the lady mostly as a naughty housewife face from the 50's with a modern twist with her body and body language. I always think the people in Mad Men are like people from the late 50's with a wink. I also wanted to keep some abstract shapes in the back ground to give it a little bit more depth. Happy Saturday. :) ...
I can't even tell you how amazing this challenge of a painting a day has been in the month of August. I feel like I have learned so much already and we are only 10 days in! I have been working on a few little paintings for an upcoming art show and I am feeling very inspired. I working on a couple of paintings of people on bikes :) This bike is very similar to my first bike- I vividly remember the turquoise and how much I loved circling around the block. For some reason riding a bike reminds of the times when you're young and you don't have a care on the world. PS Painting is an original oil painting- 8X8 for the Goodfoot group show- 88 strong. If your interested in purchasing this amazing painting- shoot me an email erikaleesears@gmail.com and we can go over the details. ...
Hello! I didn't realize how busy this month was going to be until after starting this challenge of doing a painting every single day for the month of August. :) I am doing a group art show in September called 88 Strong at the Goodfoot . September- I said the S-word! It's a sign summer is coming close to being over. :( I am going to be doing 8 pieces for the show and I am going to pick scenes form Portland. There are small pieces so they fit perfectly in the month long paint-a-thon of a painting a day. This is a painting of the Portland Rose Garden and I wanted to do something with realism and classic landscape techniques but with the abstract shapes. I really wanted clean bursts of color but more square bursts of color like a digital burst of color. I sound so artsy! lol :) My hubs as you know is a big computer geek and he makes i-phone applications. I do all the accounting work for the computer starts up which gives me the time I need ......
This weekend we made it out to the coast and the weather was just perfect. I am actually a little surprised at how gorgeous it was because we hardly get weather like this. Typically you go to the coast in full jeans/sweatshirt/hat/gloves and get a whiplash from the wind. BRRR! but not this weekend.. it was gorgeous.. sunshine.. warm sand. and sand pipers scuttling along the ocean's edge. Awww aren't we cute in that photo below? My husband let me take a quick pic of us and his beard. :) We took a walk around some of the trails and we saw 2 little black bear cubs. and the problem was.. I was wearing a bright red sweater. I was a little panicked because they were maybe 20 feet away from us and I wasn't sure if bears are like bulls with liking red? We didn't see mama bear, but we scooted out of there so fast! and guess what else.. I am so excited to announce that I am going to be a doing a painting every day for the month of August. I start......
Just finished this painting of mothers and daughters in the subway. Oil on canvas :) I just love how people read on the subway and just how fascinated I am with people in this space....

I stayed up until 4 am yesterday working on these paintings because everything is due on Friday because they are framing all the work for the show. I don't think I have stayed up that late since I was last in Vegas like over a year ago. This is the last of the still life- playing around with glass. and I wanted to play with the blues in the glass and the dark back ground.. Every time I do still life.. I start thinking about the Sound of Music - and that song.. "This are a few of my favorite things"... :) 8X8 oil on wood. I am still stuck with a cold and I keep thinking am I in the worst part yet? Thank you for all of the home remedies :) I am not a huge fan of popping cold medicine. I remember I caught a cold when I was in Italy and I was desperate for anything! I went into the pharmacy and the pharmacist didn't speak English. I did the gesture of a cough like I was sick and he gave me this medicine and I found out later it was cold medicine with codeine. I totally had the spins the rest of the trip. :) One more from the NYC Subway.. Subway at night and lots of electricity! I tried to emphasis the blur. Don't worry my vision has not been effected by my cold yet. 8X8 oil on wood. Information about the show: The Big 100 is 100 artists doing 15 paintings each all for the set price of $50. Cash and Carry Show. December 3-4th 5-10 pm at the Goodfoot . --...
I love New York City... more from the subway. I just love the energy and the eccentric/diverse people. Since I started painting these little New York City paintings I noticed 2 things- there are many man bags and lots of sneakers. :) 8X8 oil on wood. More from the New York Subway. :) Oil on wood 8x8. I think I might do 1-2 more in the New York subway. This one I can hear the WOOOOOSH of the subway....
I am sooo behind on getting these paintings done in time. I decided to a small series with in the 15 of the subway people of New York and playing around with the blur of the subway. :) Ahhh New York. Here is a man reading outside of the New York City Public Library. :) I remember when I was in high school I saw that movie 12 Monkeys with Brad Pitt/Bruce Willis and I saw the NYC Public Library lion in the movie and I thought that the lion was so big and on guard. The first time I went to NYC and I saw the lion, and he was so much smaller in person! Still the lion is adorable- or should I say ferocious?...
Well first of all- how am I going to do a painting a day? How?! This is a man in China Town in New York City talking on his cell phone. He was wearing one of those old fashioned 50's wedge cap like for a old fashion diner for a Chinese restaurant. I also wanted to play with a more impressionistic take on the man with dabs of color with out blending. I keep messing around with the glass behind him....
Just finished this painting today- it's 10x10 inches with oil paint for the 10X10 show for Art Media. Homeless person sleeping on a bench in New York City's Bryant Park. He was shaven and his stuff was really organized. I wonder what kind of life he has. It's not titled yet- if anyone has ideas let me know!...
