I have the fever- the thrifting fever!

I have come to accept that I am an avid junk collector or maybe I should call myself a junk connoisseur or maybe call it a thrift connoisseur.   I have had a love for thrifting since highschool where I used to dig in the dollar bins and rummage through my parent's attic searching for old prom dresses and old hats.  I love a good thrift because it's like finding a treasure that has been forgotten all about and the treasure found me.  Maybe I am a little bit of a sucker for a nostalgia thrift- because I love thinking about where something came from.   I have been noticing there are a ton of tv shows revolving a good junk hunt and I wanted to share with you my favorites.
Dirty Money is the much watch if you love a good thrift. The show is about two brothers in New York City- they do everything from dumpster dive, pick up broken junk from antique dealers, and plenty of haggling.    They basically turn old junk into vintage treasures and sell it at different flea markets all over New York City.  The brothers are a little crass but they call their love for junk- the fever. So anytime they see a hoarder- they say that person has the fever.  The show is funny- and completely inspiring to fix up old junk.  My fav is when they turn a broken busted up Schwinn into the Pee-wee Herman bike.
Storage Wars- is a show about when people default on their storage locker they go up for auction. This show is completely addicting because they are all treasure hunters.  Even though they are looking to just turn the unit into fast cash.  I love seeing what's inside the units and they all make highschool jabs at one another.  A couple of cast members own thrift shops- and it's neat to see more of a whole sale end of a thrift shop.
Picker Sisters- is a show were they go into the south and literally go through people's rusted old junk.  It's two ladies who are interior decorators that turn an old tractor chain into a coffee table.  Even though they don't do the dirty work- their business partner does- it's pretty remarkable what something can become.   The show is a little candy coated but the show has some great thrifty ideas.
Do you have the fever?

PS- I have some DIY's and paintings coming this week. ;) Photos courtsey of Pinterest.

I was just about to go and eat my lunch, when I got pulled into your post!! I am an avid thrifter, I just love it!! I started way way back when I was younger and this boy in school was wearing this great jacket and he said he payed 3 dollars for it at a thrift shop and thats how it started, although my Nana always went to the thrift shops, I just didn't pay enough attention. So, now I always go. Love the things in the pictures, I would have a hard time deciding what to buy :) I shouldnt watch these shows either, I may not do anything else in the day ;) Have a great Tuesday flower! xx Kizzy!

I've never heard of Dirty Money! I logged onto my DirectTV app on my phone and scheduled it to record...oh how I love technology...I'm excited to see it. I hope no one ever thinks I have the fever to the point of hoarders *crossing my fingers* - then again my other half would probably say I did have the fever!

I love vintage stuff but don´t have that much luck in finding good stuff for myself - the second hand here in my area ain´t that good unfortunately..!

Oh wow! I'm clearly out of the loop because I hadn't heard of any of these shows, but I'm definitely gonna try to tune in! I have the fever for sure! So much so that I end up seeing a lot of the same people at the places I go to thrift. Haha. My poor bf gets dragged along to everything.

buying used treasures is so gratifying. It would be fun to own a thrift shop one day.

The coffee table is amazing. I'd never think it was made of an old tractor chain!

Thrifting is awesome. I wish I did it more often. Once I'm there I'm good, but getting up and going thrifting is that hard part.

You're in Portland right? Do you know of any good places to shop for thrift/antiques? I can't find any good stores in Vancouver.

Erika Lee @ A Tiny Rocket said...

Stephanie- it depends what you are looking for. if you want thrift clothes there are ton of places in Portland on burnside, belmont and hawthorne but if you want to do real thrifting- you go estate saling.. which is pretty AMAZING!

yes, i have the fever and now i want to watch those shows. i could spend an entire day wandering through thrift/antique stores.

I don't even like pieces for their "value," I just like them for the quirkiness that makes me smile.

Thanks for stopping by my blog! I must admit I am slightly in love with thrifting. I may have to make my rounds to my favorite stores at least twice a month now.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that thinks boys are strange. : ) And I'm so obsessed with shows like Hoarders and extreme couponers, so maybe I should try these shows out! Thanks for the tip.

we have been collectors for years and my advice (not that you asked for it ;)) is to restrain yourself to some extent. after years of collecting many want to sell everything and it's easier to buy than sell for profit. too many things can be a burden, especially if you want to move.

i've never seen dirty money and will check it out. we watch american pickers, which is really good.

happy hunting!

i just asked scott about collecting and he said people should collect small things like silver & gold!

I LOVE Storage Wars, but I'll have to check out Picker Sisters!
I never really was into thrifting until I started blogging and saw how amazing and affordable it was. I definitely plan to go out more and try to find some treasures! :)

Also, I've only recently become a pinterest-er and I have to admit...I'm addicted! It's sooo great. My bookmark dilemma is solved. I've already perused all your boards :)

Ahh to have cable! These look like such fun shows. I wish I was more inclined to beef up vintage pieces, but I am lazy and find myself at IKEA too much. Love those lamps in the Picker Sisters photo.

I love thrifting so much! There's just something about the thrill of the chase, and not knowing what treasures I might find... So fun!

I wish there were shows like that in Italy!! I love going to thrift shops. I rarely buy something because my house it's too small and already full of junk...

I do enjoy thrifting! I just get to do it enough!! But you have successfully passed on the fever, so I'll have to make time this week :). xx oo

Lady, you read my mind! Today I woke up with this overwhelming desire to shop! I love thrifting. I actually get a rush when I find something wonderful for so cheap. It's a good feeling when you can pay $10 or less for something that was originally $35.

Jessi said...

I wasn't really into it until this year, but I think it's either I had good luck or a clearer idea of what I was looking for :)

Omg. The fever. I have it, I'm afraid. This bodes ill for my checkbook.

I feel like it's Christmas every time I walk into a thrift store and find some great deal. It's kind of a rush. Like uh, drugs?

Really cheap, vintage-y drugs.

I almost love things more when they're NOT new. I feel like I'm getting to share their history, like they have special meaning and significance because they've already lived one life with someone else.

AWESOME. I'll have to check these shows out! I love thrifting and going to antique stores/flea markets. So much fun. YOU NEVER KNOW what you will find!

I LOVE thrifting!! I actually thrift more to find clothing than household things---you can find really nice stuff if you have the patience!

I'll have to check out a few of those. My Husband watches Storage Wars and American Pickers, but Picker Sisters sounds way better!

I just found an amazing blue suede skirt at the goodwill the other day.

Not only do I have the fever, I think I have a a fatal junking disease! I swear I can not get enough! I read about it, watch it on TV, do it in my spare time, dream about it, and do it for a living!

i LOVE that last pic with all the old photos!

i love thrift stores(charity shops in UK) but am an avid de-clutterer. so no, i don't buy junk or trinkets. but i love browsing and buying books, and will buy something i think fits well in my home.

i also love that there's a story to a discarded item, and i love a bargain!
