Hello! This week has been such a whirl wind and have a little bit of bad luck this week. First I was taking the dogs for their morning walk and I am not sure what it is- but they don't like the postman. Sometimes the postman does throw treats at them but sadly they will never have love for the postman. The Postman told me he is only allowed to throw treats if the dog is barking. I was taking them for a walk and they saw the postman and started barking and pulling the leash ..and then my keys fell into water grate. :( So what do I do? I put the dogs back in the house and I grab a ski pole and put on my rain boots. I feel very Macgyver at this point. I open the grate and measure how deep the water is with the ski pole. There is a ladder on the side going down into the water and I climb down and measure the water- maybe it's a foot deep. Then I start thinking- don't rats and crocodiles live in the sewers? Since I live in Oregon and I don't think Oregon has crocodiles because it gets so cold here.. so maybe the crocodiles can't survive in the sewers... but we do have bears. Could I knock a bear unconscious with my ski pole? Thankfully there is construction work being done in my neighbor hood and they saw me go down grate with a ski pole. So they go down the grate for me and rescue my keys. :) I'm sure a bear would go eat the construction worker first, since they wear bright orange. Also I have been running all over town trying to find a thrifted book shelf- I would think it would be an easy find but I went to 7 thrift stores- and I only found 1- made of plastic. Is there a book shelf shortage? Lastly there is construction going on in my neighborhood- lots of construction! I guess there was a recall on siding? I know bad luck comes in 3's so.. maybe I will find that book shelf soon and it was a tiny bit of good luck that the construction workers saved the day by rescuing my keys.
What are you up to this weekend?

Wow. I admire your ingenuity! I would've been staring in the grate forever trying to think of what the hell I would do! If it makes you feel any better, though I doubt it will, I recently locked my keys in my car...while it was running...parked in front of the mailboxes in my neighborhood. I didn't have my phone or anything so I had to wait until my other half came home from work. Called a locksmith and paid 150 bucks to pop the lock. 3 hours later I was saved. CRAZY! Did that make you feel any better? I think you did a fabulous job coping with your less than great luck. I hope you find your bookshelf...it's tough when you are looking FOR something to find it...it'll turn up when you aren't expecting it! (Sorry for such a long comment!)
That's some horrible luck you had with the keys. I'm incredibly unlucky too so I can seriously empathise with you here. Keep your chin up and keep smiling :)
Goodness!! I would hate for that to happen, but go you, for being brave to try and climb down there to get your keys back. Not sure if I would have. I hope you find a shelf, plastic would not do! I'm sure the luck will turn around & you will forget all about these things..I hope you have a great weekend. If it's raining like it has been, I may stay in and read or if I am brave, have a walk in it ;) xx
aw, well I'm glad they found your keys though! Here's to a luckier weekend!
ah! so sorry to hear about this, i'm sure your luck will improve now! since you live in portland you would think that you'd have no problem finding a cool bookshelf ~ this place has so many gems doesn't it??? i'm sure the right one will turn up soon ;) happy friday to you erika!

HAHA about the pole and boots. Thankful for the construction worker!
Wow, it sounds like you had a rough start to the week! I would not have had enough sense to get my rain boots and ski pole; I probably would have cried! I'm glad you got your keys back though :) I'm sure you'll find your perfect bookshelf soon!
I'm really glad that you didn't get eaten by a bear.
On the bright side, the dogs didn't attack the postman. But maybe that's just good for him. Hope it all gets better!

Oh my goodness, brave lady! I don't think I would have been able to go down there at all!
Hope your weekend is great and your luck turns around!
Awww I hope you get some good luck soon. I'm just getting this funny image of you going down in the sewer with your boots on. I could never do that! I am so not a macgyver person

Oh my gosh...wow you are very tricky with things! Haha. and what is it about dogs and postmen?
xo
So glad that you got your keys! Good luck with the bookshelf search. Our bookshelves are all cheap $20-$30 ones from places like Target. They look nice enough, but it would be nice to get something of a better quality someday.
oh my word your dog's little face is so adorable. and construction workers are the best - they rescued me from being locked in a house where the door was seriously jammed (they heard me struggling with it across the street. a little embarressing, but it took them a few minutes to open it, too). have a lovely weekend!
ooooooh man that is so stressful. i can't imagine dropping my keys like that. i'm trying to picture exactly what you were climbing down into.. anyway does not sound like fun, thank gosh for the construction workers! rats.. yuck.
my old dog haaaaaated the postman too.. we used to have our mail come right through the front door and our dog would tear it up upon entry haha.. it was hilarious but also annoying because all the mail would have teeth marks in it. better the mail than the mailman though.
i can't believe you actually climbed down there. girl, be careful.
it's not all going to end badly, i'm sure. you got your keys back thanks to some knights in shining armor, ok construction workers. you will find a vintage bookcase or maybe you can get a new one and make it look vintage? and, the construction will end. hang in there and have a nice weekend!
Some days are like that! Reminds me of one of our favorite kids books, Alexander And The Terrible Horrible No Good Very Bad Day (have you read it?) only he gets gum stuck in his hair and his ice cream falls off the cone, and his favorite marble goes down the bathtub drain...
We just got shelves at ikea yesterday, maybe you should go there?
I noticed your comment on The Fifty Factor. You wrote about being "a little bit of a introvert at family functions". That has happened to me because I can't get a word in and just give up.
Two tech start ups run on a cheap calculator - wow that's something.
Well nice blog and hope your paper airplane flies far.
Oh dear! My hear was racing reading this~ here's to a better weekend, Erika!
cute doggie.
wow- sounds like a crazy week. i've been on the bookshelf hunt quite a few times. they are really hard to find, especially vintage ones.
i've even blogged about it more than once :) good luck with it!
Loved this post ... it has adventire, suspense and a happy ending!
